The wait is finally over! The 2025-26 Speech and Debate season officially begins on November 1st, and Hellgate was proud to host the very first tournament of the year. Competitors from all over Montana traveled to Missoula last weekend to kick off a brand new season full of competition, collaboration, and creativity.
For many students, the first tournament brought a mix of excitement and nerves. Whether it’s a senior returning for one last run or a novice stepping into their first round, the opening weekend sets the tone for the months ahead. It’s a chance to see old friends from other schools, test out new pieces and arguments, and finally put all that practice time to work.
Hellgate’s team has been preparing for weeks, meeting after school to write speeches, refine debate cases, and practice delivering them confidently. Students in events like Impromptu (let’s go, short prep squad!), Informative Speaking, Public Forum Debate, and so many more have been working hard to get ready for this moment. Even though the nerves are real, the energy and enthusiasm are even stronger.
Coach Connie Moothart said that she’s thrilled for the new season to get underway. “I’m excited for this season to kick off! I can’t wait to see what all the kids will accomplish,” she shared. Her encouragement and guidance, along with that of the other amazing coaches, have helped the team get ready for what’s sure to be a busy and rewarding few months.
Hosting the first tournament added a special layer of pride and responsibility for the Hellgate squad. Along with competing, team members helped to make sure everything ran smoothly and made sure visiting schools felt welcome. Hellgate coaches and team captains reminded everyone to show the kind of hospitality and sportsmanship that makes Montana’s Speech and Debate community so strong.
After the excitement of this past weekend, the team will be back on the road every other weekend through February, traveling to tournaments across the state: from Kalispell and Helena to smaller towns that love hosting their local tournaments. Each competition brings new challenges, friendships, and opportunities to grow as speakers, performers, and teammates.
As the season kicks off, one thing is clear: Hellgate’s Speech and Debate team is ready to bring the energy, the hard work, and the heart that have made it one of the most spirited (and successful) programs in Montana. Whether it’s debating complex issues, such as religion being a prerequisite for morality, performing powerful pieces, or cheering on teammates between rounds, this team is ready to make this season one to remember!
