While scrolling through TikTok you hear many different people, sounds, and songs. Trending audios change every week, with a new one popping up and going viral every day. Songs that trend go big off the app, on charts such as the Billboard 100, or with the artists gaining more followers or streams than ever before. Songs made years or decades ago can regain recognition or rise back up on the charts after going viral on TikTok.

Artists like Fleetwood Mac, who were already very well known, became viral again with Nathan Apodaca, known on TikTok as “420doggface208,” made a video showing him skateboarding and drinking Ocean Spray’s cranberry juice to Fleetwood Mac’s song “Dreams.”

On music apps such as Spotify or Apple, there are playlists made, such as Spotify’s “teen beats” that are based on trending TikTok songs. On Soundcloud, another music app, you can find the sped-up or slowed-down versions of songs, which are commonly used in videos. Many sounds on TikTok are edited songs, either with other songs or with trending audios. Mashups include artist CupcakKe’s song “CPR” and Maroon 5’s “Misery mixed together and the occasional addition of the iconic Reece’s Puffs song. Songs created years ago such as Yung Leans “Ginseng Strip 2002” which went viral earlier this month, was released in 2013, but as of January 2022, has 66 million listens on Spotify alone. Popular singer and rappers such as Nicki Minaj, Jason Derulo, and Kesha, often have songs going viral, such as “Backstabber” by Kesha, which recently blew up, and B.O.B and Nicki Minaj’s “Out of My Mind,” which blew up because of Minaj’s rap last year.

TikTok is a great way for new artists to promote their music, with the possibility of going viral being one video away. Artists are discovered every day, with some of the most famous being Meghan Thee Stallion, Lil Nas X, whose “Old Town Road” was an instant hit, and Doja Cat. These artists were already well known, but after blowing up on TikTok with dance challenges, trending audios, they sky-rocketed.
