*Spoilers ahead
Being one of the most talked about movies recently, Obsession by Curry Barker starring Inde Navarrette and Michael Johnston was definitely a very interesting and exciting movie. Obsession came out on May 15, 2026 and ever since then everyone on the internet has at least heard about it.
This movie did an amazing job making sure everyone watching was on edge. The lighting, coloring, and acting made sure that there was an eerie vibe throughout the entire movie. All of the actors in Obsession were great but the stand out was Navarrette who played Nikki. She did an absolutely amazing job of making sure everyone was at least creeped out while also making sure the viewers will end up seeing her as a victim.
Obsession follows the story of Bear, played by Johnston, who has feelings for one of his friends. Bear could not bring himself to tell Nikki that he liked her so he bought a toy called a One Wish Willow which grants him his wish of “I wish Nikki would love me more than anyone else in the world.”
But instead of the real Nikki falling for him, something ends up possessing Nikki and making her crazy. While Nikki becomes more and more possessed she starts doing more creepy things and in the end, kills the two others in the friend group because of the thing possessing her.
The movie is told from Bear’s point of view but even with this perspective I believe that Nikki is the victim of this movie. Yes, she was the “scary part” of the movie, but it was obvious that the villain was Bear.
Bear knew that the wish he made took away Nikki’s control over her own body but every chance he got to reverse it, he chose not to. Most of the decisions that he made ended up spiraling into the deaths of many other characters.
This movie did an incredible job of making sure that the viewers get the message of the movie while also leaving room for the audience to interpret it in their own ways. This is part of the reason why this movie got so much attention on the internet.
It sparked debate on every platform of social media because of the messages of the movie, character choices, and overall themes. I believe that this is a reason that this movie did so well in story telling and in viewers’ thoughts.
I thought that this was an incredible movie and I would highly recommend watching it at least once. Although if you are not great with horror then I would prepare yourself before turning it on.
