Most people have hidden talents that stay hidden, but now at Hellgate High School you can openly showcase them.
Anne-Marie Amons, Mckiel Cooper, and Story Land have come together as seniors for their National Honors Society (NHS) project to host a talent show on Oct. 22 at 6 p.m in the Zootown Arts Community Center (ZACC) Showroom downtown in Missoula.
“We wanted to do a fun project where we could bring together some of our friends, and the Hellgate community to showcase their wonderful skills and talents,” said senior Land.
The talent show is being hosted on a school night, which is when the seniors said they believe there will be the greatest turnout. The group of girls hasn’t decided whether or not there will be a ten-dollar ticket fee at the door. If the fee is enforced all proceeds are going to be donated to the Watson’s Children’s Shelter.
The students know how hard the pressure of a performance in front of others can be, so they said they have decided to consider appointing a judge, but assume the talent show will turn into more of an open mic performance where students can express their creativity freely to the audience. If they decide before October that they want to have a judge, there will be one gift basket for the winner.
According to Speak Up Studio, “…when children are encouraged to express themselves through art, they develop a sense of innovation that extends into their adult lives.” Having young adults participate in the talent show will help them to step out of their comfort zone and encourage future roles and relationships in performing arts.
The ZACC supports many artists ranging from local to regional, by being transparent about their practices. In their mission statement it says, “…being a safe, open, inclusive space in which all community members can comfortably create, collaborate, and thrive.”
While the talent show is being hosted mainly for Hellgate students, Ammons, Cooper, and Land also want to include any other young adults/kids come out and perform. By scanning a QR code on their information flyer anyone can learn to sign up and take part in their NHS project.
