Due to the large fan base and interesting concept, A Minecraft Movie was certainly held to high expectations. The actual movie fell almost directly in the middle of these expectations. Some loved it, others hated it, but it was an interesting watch for all, that’s for sure.
The movie is funny, it definitely has that going for it. Though some of the humor may be very suited for a middle school boy (which makes sense, as that is probably who it was made for), there is a little bit of something in there for everyone to have a laugh at, even if it is just out of the pure stupidity of a particular scene or line.
The CGI is pretty good too. The movie is able to immerse the audience in the world of Minecraft. They do a great job of portraying the world as it might appear if it was real and the interesting CGI adds another level of humor to this already joyous movie.
The acting is a little bit cringey, but it fits the vibe of the movie perfectly. Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Jennifer Coolidge are all clearly having a wonderful time with their roles and that joy really shines through. The cast clearly had a fun time with this movie, which makes the watch all the more enjoyable.
One of A Minecraft Movie’s biggest flaws is that they seem to, whether inadvertently or not, play into the stereotypes surrounding boys and girls playing video games. All of the male characters are fighting the monsters and moving the story along while the girls, for the most part, just build a pretty house. It just kind of plays into that stereotype of girls only playing video games to build pretty things, while the boys are the ones actually contributing to the story. This, of course, might not be intentional, but it does come off that way as audiences watch the movie.
Another difficulty in the movie is that they seem to be trying to do too much. There is a lot going on throughout the plot and some things aren’t expanded upon when they could have been really interesting. A Minecraft Movie clearly is attempting to show how important creativity is in the current world, especially for adults, but the message kind of falls flat with how cluttered the rest of the movie is.
Overall, it is a pretty enjoyable watch, at least once. It definitely is fun and has some humor, so if you don’t mind a little ‘middle school boy jokes’ it is definitely one to check out. The concept alone is very good, but the execution? Well, that’s up for you to decide.
