A Delta plane flipped over in its crash in Toronto coming from Minneapolis on Feb. 17 after concerns were reported involving the weather conditions.
Plane crashes have been no surprise as of recent events in the past few months, with several deadly crashes and air malfunctions occuring. It is very lucky that all 80 people–76 passengers and 4 crew members–survived this particular crash despite some injuries. 21 people have been taken into hospitals and have since been released.
This is the first major plane accident in the past month that hasn’t created any deaths or major injury. On the other hand, the D.C. air collision with a passenger airplane and military helicopter resulted in 67 deaths on Jan. 27. This was followed by a medical transportation plane crash, killing 6 passengers and 1 person on the ground. Then 10 people were killed when another plane went down on Feb. 6.
This Delta Air Lines flight DL4819 had a crash landing at Canada’s Toronto Pearson International Airport. There were no initial concerns in the air traffic regarding the plane’s landing, but things took a turn when the landing became more forceful and the plane fully flipped over before making it to the terminal.
According to BBC News, after the plane’s upside down landing, passengers were “left hanging upside down while still strapped to their seats, before they scrambled over luggage to escape onto the snowy runway.”
The cabin crew entered a quick and safe exit for passengers from the plane, and some passengers took to social media to share their experience. Airport emergency workers and first responders arrived at the scene just minutes following the crash.
Delta is now offering 30k dollars to passengers. The gesture allegedly “has no strings attached and does not affect rights,” said a Delta Care Team spokesperson.
Despite current concerns about flying, flights are still taking off every day. Student Stella Gardner was traveling earlier this month around the same time as the crashes. “I noticed a lot more safety measures taking place,” said Gardner. “Everyone just kind of seemed on edge because it was like a week after the big crash in DC.”
“I felt like there was always something in the back of my mind, thinking what if this is one of the planes that crashes,” said Gardner. This recent sudden increase in plane crashes has been looming over all of our heads, with individuals not knowing when or where the next one will happen.
It’s hard to say what the safety measures are going to look like moving forward. “Right now, I don’t think it is getting better with the way things are progressing. Trump fired a lot of aviation workers,” said student, Avena Chao. This is growing into a larger problem with the U.S. administration and how much funding they are putting toward aviation and safety precautions.
Despite these concerns, airplanes are still a very safe and secure form of transportation, and it is very rare for sudden fatalities to occur. The situation in Toronto that could have been a terribly fatal crash landing was managed very safely and saved the lives of the people on board.
