The commons at Hellgate High School filled with students as they gathered to learn about critical health topics during HOSA week. Held annually in November, HOSA showcases the dedication of Hellgate’s HOSA chapter to promoting health education and student involvement.
HOSA is a national organization that empowers future health professionals through relationships, community service, and career development opportunities. At Hellgate, the HOSA chapter seized the week to engage its peers and raise awareness about key health issues.
Each day during lunch, HOSA members hosted informative presentations, complete with displays, handouts, and interactive activities to educate and inspire peers:
The week started with an emphasis on hydration, highlighting how essential water is for overall health. Students learned about the benefits of drinking enough water and were encouraged to swap sugary drinks for healthier options.
On Tuesday, they discussed sleep. Presenters shared tips for improving sleep quality and explained how adequate rest supports mental clarity, immune function, and emotional well-being, topics that resonated with students juggling school work and extracurriculars.
Wednesday, HOSA members focused on viruses and germs. Through engaging visuals and discussions, they emphasized the importance of handwashing, vaccination, and other preventive measures to stop the spread of illnesses, especially as flu season approaches.
Thursday’s presentation focused on diabetes, a condition affecting millions worldwide. Students explored the differences between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and learned how lifestyle choices like diet and exercise can play a role in prevention and management.
HOSA Week concluded on Friday with an impactful session on lung health and the dangers of vaping. The presenters shed light on the harmful effects of e-cigarettes and encouraged students to make choices that support respiratory health.
HOSA Week not only highlighted important health issues but also demonstrated the dedication of Hellgate’s students to making a difference in their school community. “It’s inspiring to see how passionate our HOSA members are about educating their peers,” said Sylvie Semanoff, a junior at Hellgate High School.
HOSA members encouraged their classmates to prioritize health and wellness while promoting a sense of community involvement. As HOSA Week wraps up, students are left with a deeper understanding of the importance of making informed health choices.
