Beabadoobee, also known as Beatrice Laus, came out with her third studio album “This is How Tomorrow Moves” this August. The album is a beautiful take on love, the experience of growing up and letting go of the past. Widely anticipated among fans, it became the first of her albums to reach #1 on the UK Album Chart, having previously reached #8 for “Fake It Flowers” in 2020 and #4 for “Beatopia” in 2022.
Having toured as an opening act for Taylor Swift on The Eras Tour in 2023, Laus spent a lot of her time on the road writing this album, feeling inspired by Swift’s music and artistry. During the experience she was also able to gain more attention and positive reactions from very large audiences.
There are 14 tracks on this album. Each of them come together capture her experiences in a nostalgic and melancholic way that many fans online have expressed being able to connect with on a personal level. The whole album had received a lot of love since its release last month. Working with producer Rick Rubin, well known as one of the best producers of all time having worked with many iconic artists of all genres, he was he was able to help shape her album into ways her music hasn’t been made before.
A big part of this album is addressing Laus’ personal feelings towards growing up, while at the same time embracing those changes in who she is becoming. The first track, “Take A Bite” was released earlier this year as the lead single, which was a great song to preview the album as it leans more into her typical indie pop musical style that fans are familiar with. Her fast paced lyrical style and tone encapsulates her feeling of introspectiveness and outlook on her changing world.
Many parts of this album involve the exploration of changing relationships, whether that be romantically, with herself, or with her family. In the 5th track, “Tie My Shoes,” Laus illustrates her relationship with her father, feeling ignored and unappreciated as a child. “‘Cause I can’t keep chasin’ it, and I was only just a kid waitin’ for you to tie my shoes.” In retrospect, she is also mentioning the details of her childhood to show that she wont have her parents to guide her through her life anymore, and she has to learn to navigate it on her own.
The following track, “Girl Song,” has a slower, more melancholy piano tune, as she shares her struggles of being a girl growing into womanhood, feeling guilty for mistakes she has made. “Day like no other, and just another bad day.” This has been a song that many young women online have expressed having a connection to.
The 11th track, “Beaches,” being one of the most uplifting tracks, is about acceptance of change, and seeing them in a more positive light. She brings up how in the past she would overthink to try to justify her feelings, and is now learning to acknowledge them and let it pass. “Don’t wait for the tide just to dip both your feet in,” is a lyric that emphasizes how important it is to go after opportunities in the moment instead of waiting for things to come to you, because simply waiting won’t get you anywhere, and then those opportunities will pass by.
And lastly, the 14th and final track, “This is How It Went,” closes it off with a directed song toward her ex, and the betrayal she felt after her previous release of the single “the way things go” in 2023, being disrespected online by her recent ex boyfriend and ex best friend. “And it was my song, oh just a song, and you made it worse just by singing along.” This song has probably attracted the most attention from devoted fans who have been following Laus in her career and personal growth for a long time.
Laus is an incredible lyricist and her and her band have continued to create beautiful pieces of work over their career since Laus started releasing music in 2018. This whole album is a wonderful representation of Laus’ growth as a musician, with each track bringing something different to the table. In an interview with UPROXX, Laus says, “In my previous records, I would consistently sing about my reaction towards other people’s doings, like a blame game. But in this record, it’s accepting that there’s an inevitability of my fault there, too.” The band is currently performing in North America and Europe for their 2024 album tour.
