Millie Bobby Brown and Netflix together have released several successes in the entertainment business. From the raging success of Stranger Things which won countless awards throughout its four seasons to the Enola Holmes movies that gave new light to the classic Sherlock Holmes story, the partnership has been incredibly beneficial to both Brown and Netflix as a business. Now to add to their growing collection of shows and movies, Damsel has joined the mix.
The movie was released on March 8, 2024, and was on top of the charts the first few weeks after its release, gaining the title of the most-watched film for a whole week. Alongside Brown, there are several other renowned actresses and actors. Brown plays the main character Princess Elodie, Nick Robinson plays her not-so-loving love interest, Shohreh Aghdashloo is the apparent antagonist and Robin Wright is the hidden antagonist, and many more that work together to create the incredible movie that has joined Netflix’s top charts.
The story begins with Princess Elodie marrying Prince Henry (Nick Robinson), despite their slightly odd behavior Eoldie quickly becomes enthralled with her new husband and is excited to start their new life together. Elodie believes her husband to be feeling the same way and that they are going to live long and happy lives together in their new home. However, he has very different plans sending Elodie on a path of incredible danger where she faces fear, power, corruption, and cruelty like she’s never known.
Damsel is an incredible display of perseverance and a major positive step in reversing the idea that a princess needs to be saved by her prince. The title in and of itself is a very tasteful irony as Elodie proves to be distressed but no damsel in need of a man saving her. She fights with everything she’s got and ends up saving not only herself and her family but also a very unexpected creature in great need of saving.
The story is also a commentary on the dangers of getting revenge instead of justice and shows how disastrous and everlasting revenge can be. However, it also shows that people who do bad things will eventually have it returned to them and very bad things will happen to them. In this, there is a bit of death and mayhem that requires a small amount of viewer discretion as it is rated PG-13.
Overall Damsel is an incredibly beautiful movie that perfectly displays the power of modern technology in helping incredible fantasy worlds on paper come to life on screen. The movie gets you hooked very early on and keeps you on the edge of your seat just waiting for more and more to happen. Brown and Netflix have once again made an amazing movie for the masses that is not only an incredible watch but truly teaches you something about the growth of society. Movie filmmakers are slowly conquering the problems of modern and past society by rewriting stereotypes and rules for the better.
