At 7:30 PM Eastern time (5:30 PM in Mountain time) on April 15, one of the most anticipated Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) drafts began and was streamed on ESPN. Every year at around this time the WNBA holds a draft of the top athletes in women’s college basketball, and WNBA teams select players to make up their roster for the upcoming season.
This year is an extremely exciting draft season as women’s basketball is at an all time high of fans. On April 7, the finals of the Women’s March Madness tournament, between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the South Carolina Gamecocks, broke the record for the most watched college basketball game (men’s or women’s) with 18.9 million watchers. And just a week earlier the Iowa Hawkeyes game against the Connecticut Huskies had broken the record for most watched women’s basketball game.
Given the large uptick in women’s basketball, there are many names that are entering the draft this year that have been large topics of conversation in the past couple of months. The most talked about player being Caitlin Clark, who just recently broke the all time scoring record for NCAA basketball with a whopping 3,951 points.
There are three rounds where teams get to pick a player from the draft, each round consists of 12 players, meaning by the end of the draft there will be 36 new players in the WNBA. The team that had first pick is Indiana Fever, they picked the projected number one pick Caitlin Clark.
#2 pick was the Los Angeles Sparks who picked former Stanford player Cameron Brink. Third pick was former South Carolina player Kamilla Cardosa for the Chicago Sky. Many other big name players were picked throughout the event, such as Angel Reese for the Chicago Sky, Nika Mühl for the Seattle Storm, and Kate Martin for the Las Vegas Aces.
Overall this has been a wonderful year for women’s sports and women’s basketball, all of these players have done some amazing things and hopefully will continue to inspire young girls all over the world.
