Have you ever wondered what it would be like to create a short film with a group of like-minded people? Are you a teen looking for something creative to do this summer? Did you answer yes to either of those questions? Well, good news, The Roxy Film Academy is back for another summer of camps.
They’re offering two sessions for elementary and middle schoolers, although new this year is a two week “comprehensive program” for teens aged 14-18. The camp will have teens work as a team to write, film and edit a live action film. Additionally, the camp includes film history, the current state of the film industry, steps and resources it takes to become apart of the industry and the opportunity to meet filmmakers. “A typical day might start with learning some relevant information, then move onto our task for the day, such as script writing, filming, or editing, then we would finish the day off with either watching a film or wrapping up with a reflection and prepping for the next day,” said Grace Wolcott, one of three amazing camp counselors this year.
“My highlight of last year’s camps was getting to premiere the short films we had made and watching the kids proudly show off their work to their parents. It was always bittersweet when the camp was over, and I had to watch everyone go home, but I love watching the kids leave with a huge smile on their face, saying that they want to come back next summer,” said Wolcott, “For me, the most rewarding thing about being a part of RFA is empowering young people to make art. As a high-schooler not that long ago, I know that the prospect of filmmaking can be daunting. But I want to help to break down those barriers by providing resources and teaching them the skills they need so that they let their creativity flow.”
The camp gives teens the opportunity to use professional film equipment and be in front and behind of the camera. The camps not only cultivate creativity for students, but help to build a community for those interested in film. The two weeks of preproduction, production and post-production end with a premiere at the Roxy Theater of the short film. The camp runs July 8th – July 12th & July 15th – July 19th, Monday-Friday 9-4. It costs $500
