British rapper Little Simz released her new EP “Drop 7” as the newest installment of her Drop anthology. In the 14-minute EP, Simz experiments with new styles, she even tries her hand at rapping in portuguese. Simz shifts from their traditional style and branches out to try many new genres. Every song on this EP is unique.
“Mood Swings” starts the EP with a strong techno beat, this song is steady. Simz channels her classic flow on the verses, but overall this song didn’t really catch my attention.
“Fever” incorporates Portuguese, and another EDM type beat. This song also excels in the verses, but doesn’t stand out much in her full discography. This leads into “Torch” which is an almost too seamless transition, with both songs sounding almost the same.
“SOS”’s Brazilian sound brings a much needed upbeat feel to the EP, detailing an escape. It could use more of Simz’s fresh voice, but the beat is enough to fuel the track. “I Ain’t Feelin It” is an interesting transition to say the least.
“I Ain’t Feelin It” sounds like a classic trap song, it stands out the most on the EP. “Power” might be the best track on the album, the beat is strong and steady, short and sweet. Simz flow on this track is indicative of the title; powerful.
The last track “Far Away” is sweet like honey. This song is soft and fun to listen to, Simz showcases her gorgeous vocals, it is most definitely the lightest song on the EP.
Overall I would probably default to a different Little Simz album over this EP. It’s not a bad EP, it’s enjoyable and very experimental, but I would not seek it out over her other work.
Something about this EP felt slightly incomplete, like it was missing something too hard to pick out. If the EP had a fuller, more rounded sound it would have felt perfect.
Allegedly this EP is to promote an upcoming album, now to wait and see if Little Simz keeps up with this experimental style.
