LAS VEGAS, Nev- For the second straight year, the Kansas City Chiefs have emerged as Super Bowl champions, making them the first team since the 2003-2004 New England Patriots to repeat back to back titles.
In front of 61,629 fans and after 74 minutes 57 seconds, Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes found wide receiver Mecole Hardman for a 3 yard touchdown pass in overtime to defeat the San Francisco 49ers, 25-22.
“The attitude of the team to never give up, and always believe to continue is special,” said Mahomes in a post game interview. “I’m proud of the guys man, we just battled all the way through, and just like our entire season, it came down to the last play.”
San Francisco opened the game with an early lead, and managed to hold the advantage into the locker room as the first half score would show a 10-3 49ers lead. With the lone touchdown of the first half, and a Jake Moody record breaking 55-yard field goal San Francisco’s 10 points held up to the Chiefs 3 after 30 minutes, but not for long.
To open half two, Kansas City would score 10 unanswered points as Harrison Butker surpassed Moody’s record for the longest made field goal in Super Bowl history, with a 57-yard boot of his own. After a San Francisco costly error, the Chiefs recovered a bobbled punt to set themselves up for a one play, 16 yard pass that found paydirt from Mahomes to Marquez Valdes-Scantling. With that score, Kansas City grabbed their first lead of the night at 13-10.
The next six drives from each team resulted in points as the 49ers answered right back with a touchdown of their own to regain the lead, before two Kansas City field goals and one more boot from Moody to knot the score at 19-19 as time expired on the clock.
In overtime, San Francisco won the coin toss and elected to receive as their 7:38 minute, 13 play, 66 yard drive ended in another field goal that left the door open for the Chiefs. Mahomes then led Kansas City 75 yards down the field on 13 plays in 7:19 capped by the 3-yard touchdown throw to give the Chiefs their second Lombardi trophy in as many years.
