LA based pop-punk band yungatita just released their first full length album ‘Shoelace & A Knot’ on January third. This colorful album debut is sure to put yungatita on the indie scene radar.
The first track “Poppy” is a perfect dreamlike start to the album, asking “If not forever, for a moment.” The simplistic start lends well into the next track ‘Reckless’, chronicling a toxic relationship. The band’s strong lyricism is apparent in Reckless’s opening verse, “I bet you get away with murder/ In the third degree like the burns you/ Gave me when I tried to let you in my heart.”
My favorite track had to be ‘Pick At Your Face’ with a powerful lead guitar throughout the song. The lyrics of a discontent with life hide well behind the fun and dancey instrumentalism.
‘Whiplash’ channels a more classic punk sound, with loud distorted guitar and fast drums. The story of love and admiration from afar paired with the chaos of the song is an excellent combination.
Overall this was a pretty enjoyable album, but it didn’t stray too far away from the generic pop-punk sound. Lead singer Valentina Zapata has a lot of power and emotion in her voice, the vocals are very strong throughout.
This album was a very fun listen and I would definitely recommend it to any pop-punk lover. I’m looking forward to future yungatita projects, and I’m very excited to see their music mature and grow.
