Nowhere is a new Netflix movie released on Sept. 29, 2023. The movie through its captivating plot quickly gained traction on Netflix and was easily #1 for around a week. The thriller movie is rated R, so viewer discretion is very advised.
The story is centered around the main character Mia and her husband Nico. Mia and Nico are set to live in a dystopian universe where Spain is facing an incredible lack of resources. Because of this, the government begins rounding up children to decrease the need for resources through population control. Mia starts the movie heavily pregnant while she and her husband attempt to sneak across borders into a land where they can hopefully have their new child without the fear of them being taken away. The two had previously lost their first-born child Uma as the government took her away and she is presumed to be dead throughout the movie though that is never actually confirmed.
The detailed and encapsulating plot entraps the viewer making it very inept and helps the viewer to completely understand every emotion The main character has.
In their attempts to escape their disastrous country, the two get separated by their transporters and put in separate transport boxes, this is the last time we are shown Nico in person. The train car Mia ends up on is put on a large transport boat. The boat encounters a horrendous storm and ends up capsizing, dumping every train cart into the middle of the ocean. While her husband’s location is unknown for the rest of the movie and the only form of contact the two have is a few heartbreaking phone calls on cell phones that barely work. The whole story is filled with strained possibility making it incredibly captivating
Much like the classic movie Castaway, the main character Mia suffers from the isolation, starvation, and dehydration found with being lost. Countless scenes in the movie give a shred of hope that our main character may escape her metal box prison many of these scenes turn out to be delusions from Mia’s slow devolvement into insanity. Much like all stranded in the middle of the ocean movies Nowhere depicts the descent into insanity very well.
Each moment Mia begins to lose hope she receives a revitalizing phone call from her husband that encourages her to continue for her and her baby’s sake. The ending we get is certainly not a fairytale, however, it portrays a very important message of perseverance and determination. Mia was young and lost so much in such a short time but because of her dedication to being a mom and her perseverance for the life of her child, she keeps them alive and creates a beautiful and powerful story. Hope is a powerful force and never giving up on your hopes is what drives people to do incredible world-changing things.
