Every year since 2015 around the holiday season, music lovers everywhere have gotten to experience the joy and excitement that is Spotify Wrapped (unless you listen to Apple Music, loser).
Spotify Wrapped is a marketing campaign by Spotify that allows its users to view a compilation of data about their listening habits. Starting on the first of January every year, Spotify begins tracking everything from the vibes of the music you listen to, to the number 1 song you played.
Since 2015, there have been many updates to data it collects. This year Spotify included a “listening personality”, a character that is meant to describe your listening habits. Such as Shapeshifter (listening to a variety of songs and artists), Luminary (upbeat and pop music), Alchemist (making a lot of playlists), or Vampire (emotional, atmospheric music).
Spotify also included a “sound town” this year. Users are assigned a town in the world where many people have a similar music taste. The towns included Provo, UT, USA, – Jakarta Indonesia – Burlington, VT, USA – Cambridge, MA, USA – Berkeley, CA, USA – Cuiabá, Brazil – and many more.
Users also get to find out their top five artists of the year and Spotify releases who was the most people’s number one artist each year. In 2021 and 2022 the number one artist was Bad Bunny. But this year, to no one’s surprise, the number one artist of the year was Taylor Swift.
Spotify also keeps track of the amount of time users spent listening to music throughout the year, the top five songs users spent that time listening to, the genres of music most listened to, and this year, for the first time, they included a message to fans from their top artists.
The artist recorded a video of themselves, usually thanking their fans for listening, and the video was put into every top listeners Spotify Wrapped slideshow. While many artists used this video in a sweet way, some artists decided to play a prank on their fans and released a funny video (*cough* Flo Rida *cough*)
Overall, Spotify Wrapped is a fun experience that most users really enjoy and look forward to each year.
