For the first time in Hellgate history, the girls soccer team is scheduled to attend the State Championship Tuesday starting at 1 P.M. against the Bozeman Hawks at Bozeman High School.
Senior Chloe ‘Chico’ Anderson is a 4- year member and this year’s co-captain, and she’s planning on a win. “I’m feeling a little nervous because Hellgate Women’s soccer has never made it this far at state,” said Anderson. “We want to come home with the win.”
Due to the game being played in Bozeman, parents and staff organized a special opportunity for spirited students. This year is the first championship for the girls, but it’s also the first time Hellgate has had a traveling student section. “There’s nothing better than having a supportive student section, especially during away games!” said Anderson. Parents and staff alike have banded together to provide 52 students free transportation, lunch and a day of excused absences to cheer.
The girls don’t plan on the game being easy. “My biggest challenge for this game is being able to work on both defense and offense.” said senior Riley Lumpkin, who has also played for the Knights girl’s soccer team for 4 years. Lumpkin continued, “I think in all Bozeman has good players but we have a team with a lot of passion that can definitely get the job done.”
Anderson admitted her concern about the creativeness of Bozeman’s midfield. The team, however, will be challenged by themselves. “I think the biggest challenge our team faces is getting complacent and playing too individualistic,” said Anderson.
With 14 wins this season and a single loss, the girls’ reputation is at an all-time high. “I think our team wants it more.” said Anderson, “we are ready to put it all on the line to hopefully make history.”
