Students Celebrate Earth Week with Unique Designs in “Trashin’ Show”

On Earth Day, SAVE, Hellgate’s environmental club, held their annual “Trashin’ Show” to celebrate the end of Earth Week. Students created runway looks made out of recycled material and showcased them in the upper gym at lunch. With 10 teams competing with looks made in different classes, Margot Pence, Marcus Brown, and Story Caldwell took home the first place prize.

The winning look modeled by Margot Pence featured a corset top made out of recycled jeans with ribbon and bread clips along the top. The skirt was created out of plastic with recycled soda tabs.

Walking down the runway to Britney Spears’ Circus, Pence revealed the second skirt layer of the look, made out of recycled dish rags. The look was created in Joanna LaPorte’s art class.

Taking home second place was a look made by Jorja Tafff and modeled by Dimitri Donaldson. The look was a floor length dress made completely out of plastic bags and was “inspired by the impact plastic has on the environment”, said Tafff.

Winning the 3rd place award was Claire Kinderwater, Claire Gibbons, Julian Geilen, Melina LaPlante, Elsa Westenfelder, Ruby Mae Ferriter, with the look modeled by Cate Gibbons. Titled Metamorphosis, the concept behind the look was to blend nature and human beauty. Gibbons wore a short dress with wings attached on the back made out of recycled material. Created during their spanish 5 class, they wanted to highlight the unique perspective of different topics.

The Trashin Show is an annual event held by SAVE to bring light to environmental issues and to commemorate Earth Week. The event is supported by local businesses around Missoula. Clyde Coffee, Veera Donuts, 5 on Black, Big Dipper, and Bitterroot Flower Shop all sponsored prizes for the winning look. Each year a specific theme is chosen to focus the show, this year the main focus was on the impact of fast fashion on landfills.

Judging the show, teachers Anna Bacon, Rachel Lunde, Steve Klimkiewicz, Britt Hanford, and Andrea Smith, sat on the side of the runway and scored each design based on a rubric created by SAVE.
