Missoula is slowly becoming a larger destination, and with growth comes new developments. In 2020, Pier 1 Imports on Reserve Street closed and on Feb. 24, 2021 a building permit was filed for Chick-fil-A. Many people are enamored with the chicken from the fast food restaurant, but some also have strong opinions regarding the business and its values.

As widely known, Chick-fil-A has strong Christian roots. It famously closes on Sundays to align with S. Truett Cathy, the founder’s, religious beliefs. This controversy has sparked attention worldwide and many activists are boycotting the restaurant due to rumors the corporation contributes to anti-LGBTQ+ organizations. According to Vox, Chick-fil-A announced that they would set aside $9 million for youth education, fighting youth homelessness and combating hunger. However, it was also found that they would not be contributing to any charities that take anti-LGBTQ+ stances.

Deciding whether or not to support Chick-fil-A is a personal moral decision. Many Hellgate and former Hellgate students have strong opinions on Chick-fil-A coming to Missoula. Here are some of their takes on the restaurant:

“I believe that if Missoula is committed to social justice and equality, we wouldn’t support bringing problematic organizations and companies into our town. The businesses we choose to support are a reflection of our values as a town. As a queer woman in an already very red state, I find it incredibly off putting that the town I consider a refuge from much of the homophobic sentiment in Montana would intentionally welcome an organization who’s leadership supports causes and organizations that violate my basic rights.”

“Chick Fil A as a whole challenges consumers, who supposedly hold collective power in the economy. While it is clear what CFA stands for is immoral, it is not illegal, so the responsibility to force change lays in the hands of conscientious consumers, not the government. On the other hand, their food is really good. Would you go a year without a spicy chicken sandwich if it meant changes in their policy, and the ability to enjoy nugs and Buffalo sauce free from guilt?”

“12 Count Chick-fil-A Nugget Meal is my go to whenever I am at a Chick-Fil-A. I won’t deny that I am a firm supporter of their food- the Chick-Fil-A sauce in particular, but that doesn’t mean I am in full support of their business decisions. Their past donations to anti-LGBTQIA+ organizations warranted the backlash they received. However looking to the future I am excited for its arrival to Missoula and am thankful for their recent decision to alternate their donations and refusal to donate to politicians.”

“While I think the food is pretty good, even though I’ve only had it twice, I don’t support Chick-fil-A due to the company’s donations to charities that have anti-LGBTQ+ views.”

“I think Chick-fil-A is going to make a killing coming to Missoula. Given that because I don’t know many people who at least don’t mind it. I haven’t gone one time when the food was bad. Their employees are usually nice.”
