Is Coffee Good or Bad For You?

     Caffeine is often the first thing that comes to mind when you think about coffee. Caffeine, discovered in 1819, is a natural stimulant that can be found in tea and coffee.  Caffeine is addictive and is considered a drug because it stimulates the central nervous system. When it reaches your brain you begin to feel alert, which is why many people drink coffee in the morning.  Drinking coffee can help you stay awake throughout the day.

     There are many benefits to drinking caffeine. Studies have shown that drinking four or more cups of coffee a day can reduce the risk of stroke. Coffee also lowers your risk for several conditions like type 2 diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. For people trying to lose weight, coffee can reduce the feeling of hunger and their desire to eat. It also stimulates thermogenesis which is what your body uses to generate heat and energy from digesting food. “Even though coffee can be expensive it helps me stay awake during school” says sophomore, Samantha Arnet.   

     Like many foods and nutrients, too much coffee can cause problems. Studies have shown that it’s safe to consume four 8-ounce cups of coffee per day, but drinking more than that can cause damage in the digestive tract. Consuming too much coffee can also lead to anxiety, heart palpitations and even exacerbated panic attacks. Due to the high level of tannins coffee can discolor tooth enamel leaving a yellow tint.  It can also lead to enamel wear and decay. 

     Overall coffee can be both good and bad for your body. Checking the ingredients and researching where your coffee comes from is always a good idea.
