Frank Ocean Teases New Music at Nightclub

The mythical musical figure who very rarely releases anything, Frank Ocean, released a new track last Saturday, October 19th.

This is the first track Frank has released in 2019, with his last single, “Moon River,” being released in 2018. It is the first single off an expected (not confirmed) new album, hopefully being released soon.

Frank debuted two other songs, Cayendo and Dear April, at an event he hosted in a NYC nightclub. The nightclub is named PReP+, after the HIV preventative drug of the same name. The event was an homage to what the LGBT nightclub scene could’ve been if PreP+ was available in the 80s.

The song itself is a dreamy, druggy feeling sort of slow hip hop song. It feels like you’re on a drug when listening to it, which may sound uncomfortable, but it feels great.

The best parts about the new song DHL are definitely the production and the atmosphere. The production is creative and new feeling, which supplements the atmosphere incredibly. The song feels like what I would imagine a normal hiphop song to sound like after it just took some acid and received a package in the mail. I would rate DHL a 8/10, for great atmosphere and spirit.

Cayendo (Sango remix) is an experimental pop piece with chipmunk vocals. The song has percussive hip hop elements and is very enjoyable to listen to. It’s a little on the short side with a run time of only 2 minutes and 16 seconds. The lyrics aren’t anything special but I also don’t think that’s what the song is meant to focus on, as I believe the focus is the production. The song may be short due to the fact that it’s still not directly available on any streaming platforms, or the fact that its a remix. Either way it’s really enjoyable and groovy 7.5/10.

Dear April (Justice Remix) is another track that was sort of released at Frank’s nightclub. It’s a soulful pop song that reminds me alot of another one of Frank’s songs, Higgs. The track features prominent vocals from Frank, with a slow synth backing track. Toward the end of the song, really heavy bass and percussive elements join in with Frank, which leads to a bouncy, climactic feeling beat. Dear April gets a 7 out of ten as it feels like it could be alot better without the bass drop.

Frank Ocean fans are finally hearing new music, and they’re super happy about it. On Frank Ocean’s subreddit, r/Frank Ocean, people have been practically begging Frank to drop literally anything for months. Some of the most popular posts right now are videos from inside of PrEP+,  which is an example of their disparity for new music as the sound quality of the recordings is terrible (a phone recording in a nightclub).
